Accountant Job Description

An accountant can be defined as a finance practitioner charged with the responsibility of maintaining financial accounts, keeping proper tax compliance, reports, and assisting the organizations in making adequately informed financial decisions. Accountants can be found in different sectors such as corporate companies, government systems, non-profit organizations, and other audit firms. Their tasks make them guarantee precision and honesty of the financial information, without which the decisions being made and its future development cannot occur.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and preparing financial statements and record. 
  • Account payables and account receivables. 
  • Producing and issuing monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. 
  • Maintaining adherence to the local and international accounting standard requirements. 
  • Dealing with tax calculations, filing and records. 
  • Helping in the budget and financial forecasting. 
  • In a bid to ascertain truth and avert fraud, there should be internal auditing. 
  • Liaising with outside auditors and watchdogs.

Qualifications & Skills Required

Educational Background:

  • Accounting, Finance or related degree at a baccalaureate level. 
  • Individuals holding professional qualifications e.g. CIMA, ACCA, CA Sri Lanka, or equivalent will be held in high esteem.

Experience:

  • Experience might be 0 years-2 years required at entry level jobs. 
  • At senior positions, some 5+ years of the applicable accounting or auditing experience are required.

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks, Tally, Biscuit, Sage, SAP). 
  • Adequate understanding of accounting concepts and financial laws. 
  • Practical expertise in the MS Excel.

Soft Skills:

  • High carefulness, high precision. 
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills. 
  • Good communication and past social skills. 
  • The capacity to deliver on time.

Salary Range

In Sri Lanka:

  • Entry level: LKR 60,000  – 100, 000 per month.
  • Mid-level: LKR 100,000  – 180,000 per month.
  • Top-level: LKR 180,000 –  350,000 + monthly.

Overseas (approximate):

  • UAE: 5,000AED – 10,000AED monthly.
  • UK: 25,000 – 50,000 a year.
  • Australia: AUD 60,000 -90,000 a year.
